Dry stream bed for Joan

Before

Upper garden and bridge

Joan's garden had been left for a few years and was considerably overgrown. The first task was to clear out around existing plants and create some space.

Next, carefully selected local limestone rocks were positioned along a slop on the North side of the garden to accent and take advantage of the elevation change.

I then dug a channel through two of the existing, overgrown beds to connect them with a dry stream bed. Once again carefully selected rocks were placed along to bed to create a sense of movement in the garden, with a couple of stepped rocks suggesting a waterfall. The bed was filled with gravel to set it apart from other parts of the garden and we added a touch of whimsy with a contrasting stream of gold coloured gravel.

The two beds which had been separated by concrete step stones were connected by elevating the concrete up onto stones to create a bridge over the stream.

The stream was able to wind around many existing plants in the garden and create a maximum effect with minimal disturbance. Some new perennials were added to introduce new colours and textures as well as some small trees planted that would eventually grow to hang over the stream bed and frame the view from the front garden to the back.
